The NYC Parks Trees & Sidewalks Program offers free repair on 1–3 family owner-occupied homes when the damage is caused by a city-owned tree. It is a real program — and the queue is measured in years.
Who actually qualifies
Property must be 1–3 family and owner-occupied. The tree must be city-owned (planted in the sidewalk cutout, not on private property). Damage must be attributable to the tree's roots. Commercial properties, condos above 3 units, and rentals do not qualify.
Program queue reality
Applications regularly take 18–36 months to reach the top of the queue. If you have an active violation, the Parks program will not clear the 75-day DOT clock — you must still hire private for the violation.
When paying privately is faster and cheaper
For most active violations, private repair inside 75 days beats waiting on Parks. Once repaired, your prior tree-root damage is documented in case the same tree cracks the sidewalk again in 5 years.
